October 26, 2024
Luckysummer Environment and Waste Management Organization (LEWMO) proudly hosted an immersive capacity-building session for 60 Environmental Association students from Egerton University on October 26, 2024. This inspiring day brought together bright young minds and seasoned environmental practitioners to foster a hands-on learning experience focused on sustainable waste management and ecological restoration.
Empowering the Next Generation of Environmental Champions
The day began with welcome speeches from LEWMO representatives, followed by an introduction to LEWMO’s work and ongoing projects in Luckysummer Ward. We also had the privilege of hearing from members of the Egerton University Environmental Association (EUEA), who shared their commitment to environmental protection and their focus on bridging theory with real-world application.
After the orientation, students were grouped for a rotational fieldwork session, which allowed them to gain practical experience across different project areas. The field activities, organized in designated sites within Luckysummer Ward, provided valuable insights into the initiatives that LEWMO has championed to create a cleaner, greener environment.
Highlights of the Fieldwork Session
River Restoration Initiatives
Students were introduced to our river restoration projects along the Mathare River, where they learned about ecosystem restoration techniques and the positive impact that cleaner rivers can have on local communities.
2. Sustainable Waste Management Practices
This segment focused on waste reduction, reuse, and recycling, empowering students to raise awareness on sustainable practices. Through discussions and demonstrations, participants gained insights into responsible waste management.
3. Waste Collection and Segregation at the Source
A key initiative in Luckysummer Ward is our door-to-door waste segregation campaign. Students actively participated in waste sorting activities, understanding the importance of source-level segregation for effective recycling and disposal.
4. Tree Seedlings Initiative and Potting Exercise
As part of our commitment to urban greening, students engaged in a potting exercise, gaining hands-on experience with our tree seedlings initiative. This activity highlighted the crucial role of reforestation and the need to green urban spaces.
5. Community Waste Management Projects
Participants visited various community-driven projects within Luckysummer Ward, including community waste segregation campaigns. They observed how localized waste management efforts are helping to shape a sustainable model that benefits both residents and the environment.
Reflections on a Successful Day
This capacity-building session provided students with a valuable opportunity to witness community-based environmental management in action. As future environmental scientists and advocates, the students left with a stronger sense of purpose and understanding of the real-world applications of their studies.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to the Egerton University Environmental Association for their partnership and commitment to making this event a success, and to the Luckysummer community for their continued support. Together, we are building a foundation for sustainable change, one step at a time.
